Meek+MillzRaw, gritty and talented describe the lyrical talents of Rapper Meek Mill. His skills are so natural that he has a flow like no other. Born May 6, 1987 under the astrological sign of Taurus, Robert Rahmeek Williams adopted the rap name “Meek Mill” after family and friends from his neighborhood kept referencing him by his middle name. Meek is coined as the latest rap phenomenon to come out of the city of Philadelphia.

Raised in the North Philadelphia section of the city with his sister and inspired by his mother and father; who died when he was five, Meek Mill began taking the rap game seriously at the age of 12 after losing a street battle to neighboring rappers. He says his desire to rap grew after watching his uncle Philly hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Nell. While hanging out in his neighborhood, Meek met three guys and formed the group, “BloodHoundz,” which consisted of Mel Love, Dat Nigga Lil and Young Pooh. The group lasted for fives years and Meek ventured on his own.

With a solo career in tow, Meek became one of Philadelphia’s hottest underground rap artists on an independent label. In 2007, Meek debuted his Flamerz series, which stands for hottest songs and released his first mix tape, Flamerz 1, which featured the hit single, “In My Bag.”

In 2008, Meek debuted the highly anticipated Flamerz 2 –“Hottest In The City,” which showcased more of his lyrical abilities with the singles, “I’m So Fly,” “Prolli,” and “Hottest In The City.” Upon release of Flamerz 2, it caught the attention of founder and President of 215Aphillyated Records, Charlie Mack. Mack was immediately impressed with Meek that he signed him to his management company. During the same year, he met the founder and owner of Grand Hustle, TI. TI was impressed with his lyrical ability that he offered him an opportunity to travel to Los Angeles to meet with him along with the Warner Brothers Records, within one week both record companies offered him a deal. Meek was overwhelmed by the offers; however, he felt collaborating with TI was an opportunity of a lifetime and chose his label. An ecstatic Meek was on top of the world; a record deal and the chance to work with one of hip hop’s greatest rappers and then a set back occurred. He was arrested, charged with a crime and order to serve seven months in jail.

Meek pre-released three singles from his third mix tape Flamerz 2.5 – “The Preview” in August of 2009, which featured the chart topping hits, “Make ‘Em Say,” “Imma Da Ish,” featuring Ms. Jade and “Starting Something,” in honor Michael Jackson. Within the first two weeks of its release, Clear Channel added it to their play list, which is an anomaly in the music business. In June of 2009, Meek began immediately working on his freshman album – Flamerz 3, “Hottest In America – Gangster Grill Edition,” hosted by DJ Drama and featuring the songs: “Baby Girl,” “Hottest In America,” and “I’m Killin em.” The highly anticipated cd is set to be released on January 19, 2010. Despite his stint in jail, Meek’s fans remained loyal, he currently boasts of 13 million hits on MySpace and 20 million viewers on You Tube.

In the future, Meek plans to establish the Meek Mill Foundation, which will mentor young males between the ages of 12-24 on the importance of “Education over Incarceration.” He also plans to collaborate with United Community Action Network and the Lifers of Graterford Prison to address the violence plaguing our cities.

teff

In 2010, the avid music fan can only sit back and wonder at the twists and turns that the music industry has taken, the various artists becoming popular, and the countless genres being manipulated. For many, it’s easy to absorb the sounds of a current song and wonder, “What happened to this kind of genre? Is the artist really out to create something new, exciting, and genuine, or, instead, simply produce the biggest hit possible?”
TEFF, born Travis Johnson, a hybrid of Philadelphia and Jamaican upbringing, is out to change the way that listeners conceive music. His unique combination of reggae and hip-pop, a new musical genre called “regg-hop,” along with his extreme enthusiasm for performing and recording sets him apart from most other artists. TEFF’s influence span from new to old, from random to recognizable, with the likes of his mother and Bob Marley. These, combined with TEFF’s unique modern flair, leading to a delicious new sound that consistently draws in listeners and fans, including radio personalities Izzo, Touch Tone, and Zorina of Philadelphia’s 100.3 The Beat, who described TEFF as “the next Drake.”
Recognized by reggae and hip-hop legends such as Sizzla, Busy Signal, and Beanie Man, TEFF and his endless enthusiasm for music is ready to take the Philadelphia area by storm. His first mixtape dropped in April of 2010, and, never one to quit while aheard, TEFF’s back in the studio working on yet another to compliment the first. TEFF’s forthcoming album, “Youngest Veteran,” is scheduled to drop later this year, only to be complimented by performances with another Philadelphia native, hip-hop artist Blaine Williams, also known as BlackFox, in Trinidad and Jamaica. Additionally, TEFF’s appearance on a new reality show filmed in late 2009 only serves to increase his exposure to music listeners.
With his hot regg-hop beats, conscious lyrics, and explosive performance style, it’s only fitting that TEFF has been compared to some of the biggest artists today, such as Drake, in addition to the great Kanye West. TEFF’s more than what Philadelphia hip-hop and reggae fans need right now: an artist dedicated to bringing the best of the best of his musical talents straight from his roots.

Interview with Philadelphia producer Haj of Dumhi

Posted by admin On July - 1 - 2010

haj fish eye - hi res

Whats good Haj how did you form Dumhi?
Dumhi started basically by me making a bunch of beats and wanting to do a full project. Because I dont rap or sing.. I started recruiting folks who did initially with the goal of having various vocalists on different songs.Shameless Plug (NJ), Mash Comp (DC), and Flud (BK) were three of the first vocalists I collaborated with. Since then the list has grown and grown.

Who are all the members of the group?

Well.. each project is different. With very few exceptions, I have produced all of the beats and albums that Dumhi has released. That said… I have been blessed to work with a great deal of extremely talented folks. From rappers, singers, poets to web and graphic designers to various musicians etc etc… all of these people and their contributions have left their mark on the Dumhi projects and helped shaped and form the projects yknow? As far as I am concerned they are all a part of Dumhi.

Lets talk about the project your promoting right now?

The new project is called The Jungle. All of the beats utilize Ethiopian jazz samples and the vocals are anchored by one of my favorite emcees doing it right now, Reef the Lost Cauze who appears on 4 of the albums 8 vocal tracks. All of the emcees on this project are amazing tho. Ethel Cee, Random, and Burke the Jurke… Elucid and Che Grand, Jermiside, Flud, Oxygeen… I am still very psyched about this team of emcees.

I like to think of my projects as collages. They are usually 35-40 minutes and strung together with voice snippets and sound effects to hopefully create a cohesive experience for the listener. The type of thing you hopefully want to throw some headphones on for and then chill out and listen to from start to end. I think The Jungle may be my most cohesive collage yet.

Talk about some of the features on your project how did you link up w reef the lost cauze? what about Random?

I have been a fan of Reefs since his Feast or Famine album dropped back in 2005. In 2008 I put together a project called Yoga at Home and took a shot hitting him up about featuring on a song. We linked up and knocked out what was to become “Squeeze” and realized we only lived a few blocks from each other. A couple years later and we have a GRIP of songs together. Most of them no one has heard… YET!

I met Random years ago through a mutual friend, beatmaker/producer Dn3. Random also appeared on Yoga at Home (as well as a few other Dumhi projects). Great emcee and a good friend.

One of my favorite aspects of making music is the relationships that are built along the way. I consider both of these guys (as well as really everyone I worked with on The Jungle) really close personal friends at this point. I also think they are great at what they do and so just to have the opportunity to link with them on some family stuff AND on music.. well.. its really pretty special in my opinion.

What equipment do you use to make your beats?

Mostly.. turntables, records and Ableton Live software. I will use anything that makes noise though.

I know your on your grind hard and I bet your already working on the next project(s) can you let us know what you have in the works?

I am hoping to release the next Dumhi project “The Whole World is Watching” in the Fall of this year. Its pretty well under way and some vocals have already been recorded. Never know how things will play out during the production process so I don’t want to give too much away but… Reef and Random have both already recorded for it. :)

who did you look up to in the Philly hip hop game growing up?

Well.. I honestly grew up a fan moreso than a someone who participated in the “scene” so I think I basically liked what everyone else did. Ive been a big fan The Roots, Beanie Sigel, Freeway, etc etc. Jazzy Jeff, James Poyser, Bilal…. Philly has so much to offer man. I love Philly.

Lets talk about your video w Megaran & Ethel Cee. where did you shoot it at? and who filmed it?

Haha… thats my ‘backyard’. We didn’t go too far to be “on location”. Jimmy Giambrone filmed both the Dumhi Cannons and Philly Cousins videos. (Philly Cousins features Reef and was also shot in South Philly) It was straight bbq style. we talked about Random a bit above but Ethel Cee is another one of my favorite emcees (Grab her ‘Dirty Samples’ Ep for free if you haven’t already). We filmed their parts in the morning and then started drinking and grilling. It was a really fun day.

Thanks a lot man!

Peace!
Haj…
